Ellen graduated from St. Mary's OLSS grammar school and Bayonne H.S. where she attended the beauty culture program. After high school she briefly worked in New York City at Banco Popular. Shortly there after she became a full-time mom and wife, always taking an active role in both kids lives. She helped write the bylaws for the first Headstart program in Bayonne. She would occasionally help in her best friends Rosa Liga Beauty Parlor. Ellen loved the atmosphere hanging out with friends and customers. She continued to be a person always willing to pitch in and get things done, especially when it came to the kids with PTA, cheerleading, little league, or school dance chaperone. When asked by Mason Ruhlen to help organize some moms for the concession stand at the Bayonne Pop Warner football games, she created days and shifts for the stand and turned a profit too. Along with her husband they created Sport-BHS in 1986. This was made up of parents and boosters in support of the boys Bayonne high school soccer program, with the help of other dedicated parents Sport provided awards, annual dinners, and supplies the program might need. With her support this program restarted back up in 2017. Married to Union Carpenter provided her with the understanding of looking out for one another. When the first Christmas party for the members kids was organized, Ellen would shop for each individual kid based on gender and age, decorate the hall and set up tables and chairs and continue to assist and host every year. When they started up the annual picnic where was Ellen?, buying prizes and awards helping her sister-in-law Arlene with all the kids games and she continued to assist every year. Always a sports fan she would attend every game and event for Jennifer and Jude. This continued with her three granddaughters in soccer, basketball, cheerleading, gymnastics, dance recitals, school concerts etc., whatever the function Ellen was there smiling and supportive and always the proud nana.
Ellen was forever grateful for the opportunity to babysit and nurture each granddaughter in their formative years, whether having them try new foods, trips to the playground, hours of arts and crafts, picking them up from school or doing homework with them. Ellen cherished every moment. They are now all beautiful, intelligent young women who are all different yet all share traits and characteristics of their nana. Ellen was an animal lover her entire life, the kids and grandkids were always permitted and encouraged to save and help all animals including countless strays from construction sites. They were always cared for taken to the vet if needed and all would be re-homed long before this became popular. Some of Ellens favorite summers were when we hosted kids from Northern Ireland as part of Project Children, bringing a boy or a girl from the troubles in Northern Ireland to the United States for six weeks was a labor of love. Our first child was a boy and the next year was a girl named Kathleen. The bond nurtured between Kathleen and Ellen was strong enough to have us continue to host Kathy for nine consecutive years. When we visited Kathy and her family they treated Ellen like family. She would always talk of those wonderful memories. Kathy would always refer to Ellen as her American mum.
For anyone that truly knew Ellen they knew of her love of all music but especially doo-wop "oldies". She was a walking encyclopedia of trivia regarding oldies music. She was a devoted fan and listener to WCBS 101.1 FM radio. They would have trivia contests all the time, she would get through on the phone all the time and answer and win prizes, shirts, books, and tickets especially to concerts. We were constantly going to concerts. She won so many times she was re-gifting tickets to friends. Many of these concerts were family outings, and a large part instilled the love of music in the kids. Such was her notoriety with the radio station that she was invited as one of a select few to tour the station and take part in a survey for a new format, she got to meet multiple DJs, received merchandise swag and received a tour of the studio. Ellen was in her glory! Queen for a day! Ellen was a strong believer in family tradition such as the Annual Thanksgiving dinner, Christmas wish list which continued including the grand children. The matching pajamas, which were put on Christmas Eve then all the pictures would look like Christmas morning when they opened the gifts on Christmas Eve, they would wear them home, and it's still practiced and will continue as Ellen wanted. Ellen loved sports, especially the NY Yankees and NY Giants. She would humor Jim and his many weird superstitions, during the football season like wearing a certain shirt, sitting in a particular spot, not getting up during a successful drive or only going to the bathroom during commercial. After winning the first Super Bowl she became a convert. Last year was a challenge health wise and yet she still insisted on going to the Giants fan pep rally with her husband. No one else was available to go and she knew he really wanted to go. Putting others first was a way of life for Ellen. Family trivia, Ellen's first time attending the NY Yankee game was Dave Righetti's no-hitter! she loved that day. As it became more difficult for Ellen attend games and events in town, she created the St. Sebastian Club. St. Sebastian is the patron saint of athletes. She would have the medals made into keychains and have them blessed at St Henrys. They would be distributed to countless youth coaches throughout the city, all sports boys and girls, administrators and facilitators that supported youth sports at all levels. They also included former athletes, especially those who are facing some health issues or recovering from surgery. This gesture will continue in Ellen memory.
