Obituary

Eugene Giannobile born 3-1-1921

Eugene Giannobile was born in Monteferrante, Italy and emigrated to Bayonne, NJ in 1938. Gene proudly served in the US Army as a Sergeant during WW2. Upon completing Military Intelligence School at Camp Ritchie, Gene was stationed in Naples with the Allied Military Government and served as a translator, being fluent in English and Italian. After Naples, Gene joined the famed 10th Mountain Division, 85th Regiment, Company K and sent to northern Italy. Gene was one of many brave men who fought, and won, in the battle of Mt. Belvedere against the Germans.

Gene would recount many stories from his WW2 days. One story he often told was of a scouting mission at Lake Garda in April 1945. Gene and several other 10th Mountain soldiers were headed to Villa Feltrinelli, Mussolini's villa on the lake. En route they encountered the 10th Mountain commander, General William Darby (leader of the first elite team of Army Rangers), who told them to ignore their orders and hold tight for another night as the Germans were waiting to ambush any GIs approaching the villa. Darby's intel was accurate and Gene credits the General with saving their lives that night.

Gene worked as an electrician for Best Foods in Bayonne, NJ for over 40 years. Gene was a good natured, kind soul who always had a smile on his face and a joke for the telling. Gene enjoyed traveling and visited many countries over his lifetime. His last venture, this past December, was spent on a holiday Christmas cruise to the Bahamas with his family.

Predeceased in death by his brother, Charles, Gene is survived by his sister, Blanche, his two nieces, Carla (Alex) and Joan (Izak), and his great nephews, Nic, Zeke, and Sam. Visitation is Tuesday March 13th from 4 to 8 pm at Migliaccio Funeral Home, 851 Kennedy blvd. (At 33rd st.) in Bayonne.  A funeral mass will be celebtated on Wednesday March 14th at 10:45 am at st. Henry's Church, 645 Avenue C in Bayonne with all welcome to gather at the funeral home starting at 9:30am.  Entombment will follow at Holy Name Cemetery in Jersey City.
