Obituary

Murad, Henry (Hank), age 91, died at home in New York City on December 3, 2021.  He was the beloved son of Lebanese immigrants Gabriel and Melia (Hayek) Murad, who imbued in him a powerful work ethic from an early age.

One of his many jobs as a boy was in the mailroom of As-Sameer, the Arabic-language newspaper published by the Lebanese Pen League poet Elie Abu Madey.  As an altar boy at St. Nicholas' Cathedral of Brooklyn, he loved to sneak out after services to listen to gospel music at a nearby church. An aspiring radio disc jockey, he loved music, especially jazz and gospel, and would go on to serve as a Trustee of WBGO Public Radio.

A graduate of Manhattan High School of Aviation Trades, Hank established a messenger service at the age of 19 which would become Courier Systems, a logistics company serving the Eastern Seaboard.

He married the love of his life, Lila Shamey, and together they raised their family, first in Teaneck and then Cranford, NJ.  He was the loving father of Brenda, Peter (Debra), Lili, and Richard, and uncle to Jeff Habib (Jessica), George Habib (Kathy), Amelia Pollock (Kevin), and Alexis Brezinski.  He now joins his cherished wife Lila and devoted sisters Harriet Habib Puca and Elaine Brezinski.

An avid tennis player, sailor, and student of art and poetry, he had a quick wit, an adventurous spirit, and a lifelong commitment to helping others.  He will be dearly missed.
