Joaquin "Jack" Varela Jr., 80, of Little River, SC, formerly of Bayonne, NJ, passed away peacefully on July 24, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born in Bayonne, NJ, on September 28, 1944, Jack lived a life defined by courage, service, devotion, and humor. A proud veteran of the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division, Jack later served his hometown as a Bayonne firefighter, dedicating his life to protecting others with strength and quiet heroism.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Josephine Marie Varela, with whom he shared a lifetime of memories and unwavering love. Jack is survived by his children: Jacqueline DeSanto and her husband Andrew, Joaquin (Jack) Varela and his wife Michelle, and Jason Varela. He was also predeceased by his beloved daughter, Angela Varela, whose spirit never left his heart.
Jack was a cherished grandfather to Albert, Andrew, Joey, Alexandria, Juliana, Daniella, Trina, and Nina; and a proud great-grandfather to Andrew and Hannah. He is also survived by his sister Tracee Mangine and her husband Tom, and his brother Bruce Varela. He was predeceased by his siblings Gary and Candi Varela, and his parents, Joaquin Varela Sr. and Emma Louise (née Fackina). He is lovingly remembered by his many nieces and nephews.
Known for his thoughtfulness, sharp wit, and deep love for his family—especially his grandchildren, who brought him endless pride and joy. Jack had a special way of lighting up a room with humor and heart. He had a signature style and was well known for his impressive collection of Nike Air Force One sneakers, which matched his vibrant personality.
A viewing will be held at Migliaccio Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 29, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with a second viewing on Wednesday, July 30, from 10:30 AM to 12 PM - followed by repast.
Jack Varela will be remembered not only as a hero and protector but also as a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished and the lives he touched.
