Obituary

Louis Pittner, a lifelong resident of Bayonne, passed away peacefully on Friday, August.28th 2015. He was 90 years old. Louis was the proprietor of Louis Auto Repairs where he worked many hours diligently serving his customers. Even after he retired, he could always be seen around the garage where passers-by would stop and chat. He greeted all warmly and with a smile. He was a true gentleman. Mr. Pittner served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He took basic training in the Artillery and, after arriving in the European theater, he was transferred to the Military Intelligence Training Unit (MITU). He served in the Battle of the Bulge, in Northern France and in Rhineland. Mr. Pittner received the European-African- Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Louis had been a member of the Catholic War Veterans Post 1612 since 1990. He served in the positions of Second as well as First Vice Commander. In 1999 he was elected Commander, a position he has held ever since. He actively promoted new membership; organized groups of members to visit the hospitalized vets at Menlo Park, N.J, and was involved in many fund raisers, such as the Cross of Peace, benefiting the hospitalized veterans. He also helped organize a collection campaign after the 9/11 attack on the Twin Towers and formed a committee to distribute the funds to five surviving families of the victims. He was instrumental in organizing the Bayonne Memorial Day Parade Committee and was honored to be Co-Grand Marshal in 2011. Inducted into the CWV New Jersey Hall of Fame, Commander Pittner was also a recipient of the N.J. Distinguished Service Medal. He was a life member of Elks Lodge 434, a member of the American Legion for over 40 years, as well as a member of the Golden Agers. Louis was the husband of the late Mary Pittner (nee: Lamendola) for 47 years. He was predeceased by his parents Louis and Katherine Pittner (nee: Frank), brother John, sister-in-law Bertha, brothers-in-law Salvatore Lamendola and Angelo Bassillo. Surviving Louis are his sisters-in-law Jennie Bassillo and Tina Lamendola; nephews Angelo Bassillo,Jr. (Anita), Richard, Dennis and John Pittner; niece Barbara DiMarco (Joseph), as well as his great nieces & nephews: Tracy Wentz (Jay), Brandi Bassillo, Angelo Robert Bassillo and Charlee Bollinger (Derek). Visitation is Tuesday, September 1st, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Migliaccio Funeral Home, 851 Kennedy Blvd. (at 33rd St.) in Bayonne. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 2nd at Assumption Church, 91 W. 23rd St. in Bayonne. Family and friends are welcome to meet at the funeral home beginning at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Holy Name Cemetery in Jersey City. In lieu of flowers, please donate in Lou's memory to Our Lady of the Assumption Food Pantry or to the CWV Post 1612, envelopes will be provided at the funeral home.
