Obituary

Michael Colombo - of Bayonne passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Tuesday, February 11th 2014, he was 56 years old. Born in Jersey City Mike was a proud Veteran of The US Navy, a member of The Sicilian Club and he served the City of Bayonne for 26 years, retiring as the Superintendent of Public Works, a title he held for the last 14 years of his tenure. Mike represented the epitome of public servant leadership in the Bayonne community recognizing that it was his job to make the city a better place for his fellow tax payers. There was no bigger mark on his legacy than his influence in helping transform 5th Street field from a city eyesore to one of the best baseball complexes in the country. In 1998, Mike was one of the original supporters of the Cal Ripken movement, championing the league's cause when it was in it's infant stages. Behind his belief and his backing, 5th Street Field went from a place that had no fencing, no dugouts, no press box, no bathrooms,no clubhouse, no concession stand and not even running water or electricity, to the state of the art baseball palace it is today. Above all else, Mike believed in the youth of Bayonne and doing his part to enhance the experience for the children. A short stroll down East 5th Street is all one needs to see just how much he cared. His impact will forever be felt by the thousands of children that stepped on that field and many more thousand that will follow. Mike was devoted husband to Laureen (nee: Ballance) and the loving father to Jessica, Melissa & Michael. He was the cherished son of Florence Starita and step-son of John Starita and the beloved grandfather to Cameran Colombo, Savannah Williams and Tyler Dolan. Mike was pre-deceased by his father Michael and sister Donna Ambrosio and is survived by his brothers Joseph and wife Chris, Larry & Daniel and his sister Marion Colombo as well as a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. He will be missed by all, but forgotten by none. A visitation will be held on Friday February 14th from 2-4 PM and again from 7-9 PM at Migliaccio Funeral Home, 851 Kennedy Blvd. (at 33rd St.) in Bayonne. A funeral mass will be given at 10 AM on Saturday February 15th at St. Vincent's Church, 979 Avenue C in Bayonne with the family gathering at the funeral home beginning at 9 AM.
