Obituary

Modesto Gallo, 80, passed away unexpectedly on March 18, 2023.  Modesto was born in Acerra, Italy to Michele (Michael) Gallo and Teresa (nee. Nuzzo) Gallo.  He worked as a Longshoreman for 42 years and was named ILA Man of the Year for putting his life in danger to save the life of a fellow worker.  He retired from Global Container Terminal in Bayonne in 2006.

On April 12, 1964, he married the love of his life, Immaculata Connie DiCiaccio and were married for just shy of 59 years.  They raised five children, daughters Rita, Deborah, Teresa, Melissa, and a son Michael.  Modesto was a hard-working man that always put his family first and made sure they were provided for even if it meant working multiple shifts and jobs. Modesto enjoyed spending time with his children and his son-in-laws, Danny Palangio, Stephen Lajewski, David Geyer, Daniele Ragozzino and his daughter-in-law Joanne Gallo. Modesto was blessed with 12 beautiful grandchildren, Stephen Lajewski, Justin Modesto Lajewski, Emilia Lajewski, Danielle Palangio, David Palangio, twins Matthew and Christopher Palangio, Michael Gallo Jr., Jonathan Gallo, Nancy Gallo-Geyer, Briella Ragozzino and Giovanni Ragozzino.  He was also especially blessed to have two beautiful great-granddaughters that absolutely adore him, Iris Elizabeth Palangio-Timroth and Ivy Marie Palangio-Timroth.

Modesto was an avid reader and had an insane collection of paperback books, he loved to work on Sudoku puzzles, and enjoyed watching Jeopardy on television and enjoyed attending Mets and NJ Devil games. He also loved collecting Disney pins and had an impressive collection.  His favorite Disney character was Goofy.  He shared his love of pins with his grandson, Justin Modesto.  His Catholic faith and his love for Padre Pio led him to multiple yearly visits to the Padre Pio National Shrine in Pennsylvania.  When he wasn't visiting Padre Pio, he enjoyed visiting his home in Florida and having entertaining visits with his in-laws Benny and Kathleen DiCiaccio.

Modesto is predeceased by his parents, Michele and Teresa Gallo, his siblings Mario, Michael Angelo and Salvatore Gallo while survived by the eldest brother, Joseph.  He is also predeceased by his father-in-law, Salvatore DiCiaccio and his mother-in-law, Emilia DiCiaccio whom he adored. He is also survived by his brother and sister in laws, Benedetto and Kathleen DiCiaccio, Angelina and Agostino Chiaravalloti, Maria Chiaravalloti and Judith Gallo.  He is loved by his many nieces and nephews and all extended family members of his children.
