Obituary

Sophia Lynn Donath, 19, passed away unexpectedly on June 20, 2026, surrounded by her loving family and some of her dearest friends.

Born on June 27, 2006, in Manhattan, Sophia was raised in Jersey City. She attended PS #3 before continuing her education at The Learning Community Charter School. Sophia graduated from High Tech High School in 2024 and went on to attend the University of Miami, where she was pursuing a BFA for her passion in musical theater. She was a Hurricane through and through.

Sophia was a daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin, friend, performer, traveler, and a bright light to everyone who knew her. In just nineteen years, she packed more life, laughter, adventure, and friendship into her days than many people do in a lifetime.

Music, theater, and performing were some of Sophia’s greatest passions. Whether she was on stage, in the audience at a Broadway show, or introducing friends to a new favorite song, she threw herself into it completely. Sophia had a beautiful voice, a sharp wit, and the kind of sarcastic humor that people who loved her will never forget.

Sophia dedicated herself to the performing arts from an early age and appeared in countless productions throughout middle school, high school, and college. She was proud to be a member of the Triple Threats with Next Step Broadway and further developed her talents through High Tech High School Theatre Arts, St. Peter’s Prep Dramatics, LUX Performing Arts, TADA! Youth Theatre, Wingspan Arts, and the Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star Program. The stage brought Sophia lifelong friendships, unforgettable memories, and endless joy.

When she wasn’t on stage, Sophia could often be found in the kitchen trying a new recipe, spending time with her beloved cat, Snickers, and dog, Archie, or mentoring children and helping them discover their own confidence and talents. She had a natural ability to connect with people and a generous spirit that made others feel supported, welcomed, and loved.

Sophia loved seeing the world and traveled to Cuba, Iceland, Italy, Scotland, England, Switzerland, Portugal, the Bahamas, and many other destinations, always eager for the next adventure.

Above all else, Sophia loved her family. She shared a special bond with her brother, Evan, and her sister, Abigail. Their home was filled with music, laughter, inside jokes, and three siblings constantly trying to out-sing one another.

Sophia’s passing has left an immeasurable void in the lives of all who loved her. Her family finds comfort in the countless memories she created and the love she shared throughout her life.

Even in death, Sophia’s generosity continues to change lives. As an organ donor, she made the selfless decision to give others the gift of life. Through that final act of kindness, multiple lives have been saved and forever changed. Her heart now beats in another person, while other donated organs have brought hope to families facing unimaginable circumstances.

Sophia is survived by her loving parents, Keith and Melissa Donath; her brother, Evan; her sister, Abigail; her grandfather, Bruce Donath; her aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family; and an extraordinary circle of friends who will forever carry her memory in their hearts.

The world is undoubtedly better for having known Sophia. Her laughter, humor, adventurous spirit, and love for others will be remembered always by those fortunate enough to have shared in her life.

She will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and endlessly loved.
