Obituary

Vasil Pavuk (Vas), was born on April 9, 1930, in Kruzlova, Slovakia, to the late Frank and Paraska Pavuk. He passed away peacefully on September 4, 2024. Vas was the beloved father of Frank Pavuk of Bayonne, NJ, and Anne Pavuk Wright and William Wright of Falls Church, VA. He was the loving grandfather of Nicole and Brandon Patrick and Katharine and Joshua Gusick.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred (Terry) Pavuk.

Vas loved his family, many friends and the New York Yankees. He called Bayonne his home since age 16, when he emigrated from Czechoslovakia to the United States following World War II. He was a long-time member of St. Mary's Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Church and the Carpatho-Russian American Citizens (Carps) Club, both in Bayonne.

Vas retired from the American Can Company after 41 years of dedicated service. He spent his more than 30 years of retirement crabbing, watching the Yankees, gardening, playing pinochle at the Carps Club and visiting with friends and family, especially in Northeast Pennsylvania, where he loved the mountains and spending Easter and Thanksgiving.

One of Vas's favorite pastimes was sharing stories about growing up in Europe, living through and surviving the war as a young boy, and his escapades with all his new American friends after coming to the U.S.  As a young man, he loved going to the Jersey shore, dances and movies, which helped him learn English.

He also loved sharing church and Rusyn cultural traditions with his children and grandchildren, particularly during the Christmas and Easter holidays. To all of us, he passed on the values of hard work, perseverance, humility and commitment to family and friends. His fighting spirit, which helped him survive many adversities throughout his 94 years of life, will hopefully live on in us.

A wonderful father, grandfather, uncle, brother-in-law and friend, Vas will be dearly missed by all who have known and loved him.

Viewing will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2024, from 6-8 p.m. and again on Sunday, September 8, 2024, from 2-4 p.m. and from 6-8 p.m. at Migliaccio Funeral Home, 851 Kennedy Boulevard, Bayonne, NJ.

Vas will then be taken to St. Mary's Orthodox Church in Coaldale, PA, for a visitation starting at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, September 10th, which will be followed by a full funeral service at 11a.m.  Interment will then follow at St. Mary's Orthodox Cemetery in Summit Hill, PA. at 12:30 p.m.
